Are human beings redundant? Hype and reality in the future of work

There are numerous gloomy predictions about the future of work based on the presumption of progress in artificial intelligence and robotic technologies. For example, it is suggested by some studies that approximately half of today’s jobs will disappear.

However, it is necessary to temper these predictions with a realistic understanding of the progression of the technologies that will underpin digital transformation. This presentation will evaluate the key technology platforms (including the Internet of Things, 5G, Artificial Intelligence) both from the perspective of their potential as well as their limitations. It will then postulate how these technologies will be applied in the workplace and the role of human workers in the future.

Finally it will include consideration of some of the caveats that will need to be addressed in the future workplaces in order to create a productive and healthy economy.
