Australian Government Cloud computing policy is now in effect, setting a consistent approach for agencies to adopt cloud services securely, responsibly and with stronger oversight of cost and risk.
The Whole-of-government cloud computing policy applies to non-corporate Commonwealth entities, with corporate Commonwealth entities encouraged to adopt it where appropriate.
The policy provides a clear framework to help agencies:
“This policy gives agencies a clearer, more consistent basis for making cloud decisions — decisions that affect the security, resilience and value for money of government services,” said Lucy Poole, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Strategy, Policy and Performance.
With the policy now in effect, the focus shifts to implementation across the APS.
The DTA will work closely with agencies, cloud providers and industry to support the practical application of the policy. Ongoing engagement will help identify emerging challenges, share lessons and provide advice that helps agencies confidently implement the policy.
Insights will ensure the guidance remains practical, responsive and aligned with the needs of a thriving digital government.
"Implementing the policy is about more than adopting new technology. It's about building the capability, governance and confidence agencies need to make informed cloud decisions over the long term,” continues Ms Poole.
“That's why we'll continue working closely with agencies and industry to support implementation across the APS, ensuring we realise the full benefits of safe and responsible cloud adoption.”
As agencies begin implementing the policy, the DTA will continue working across government to help build the cloud capability needed to deliver better digital services for all people and businesses.
