The DTA has launched AI Search on digital.gov.au, making it easier for users to find trusted government digital guidance.

AI Search allows users to ask questions in plain language and receive concise, citation-backed responses drawn from published DTA content. It complements the existing keyword search, making it easier to explore published policies, standards, frameworks and guidance across digital.gov.au

The capability is expected to reduce the time users spend searching for trusted digital guidance. It will also help reduce routine enquiries on topics already covered by published content, improving access to information for agencies, industry and the broader community.

Every response is grounded in published DTA content and links back to the original source material, helping users quickly locate and verify the information they require.

"Government guidance is only valuable if people and agencies can find it when they need it. By implementing AI Search, it enables users to easily access trusted information while giving them confidence in where it comes from,” explains Mr Chris Fechner, Chief Executive Officer at the DTA.

AI search is currently available in beta and only generates responses using content published on digital.gov.au. Importantly, it cannot access personal information, process requests or make decisions on behalf of users.

As with any AI-enabled capability, users should always verify and refer to the linked source material when making policy, procurement, technical or compliance decisions.

"We're committed to exploring how emerging technologies can improve government services in practical and responsible ways,” continues Mr Fechner.

“AI Search demonstrates how we can apply generative AI in practice to enhance the user experience while maintaining transparency, safety and accountability."

The rollout aligns with the Policy for the responsible use of AI and provides a practical example of responsible AI adoption within the DTA. It also establishes a reusable approach that can help inform similar generative AI search capabilities across government websites.

The DTA will continue monitoring usage trends and user feedback throughout the beta. These insights will help refine the capability, measure its effectiveness, and inform future improvements to digital.gov.au.
